eugene richards G&KCThis 12×9 photo is from Eugene Richards’ book “The Gun and Knife Club”. It was a serial for life magazine documenting his exploration of emergency room medicine. This photo I find intriguing because of the moment in time it captures. The patent on the table, shirtless and obviously in a tremendous amount of pain. The doctors, nurses, and paramedics that surround him, and the hands touching his wound. It feels chaotic, emotional, terrifying, exasperating, and yet thrilling. Looking at this photo makes me question how I would react, would I be able to take the pain? Would I be able to help someone in that much pain?

Eugene RichardsCTCBThis is a 12×9 photo from Eugene Richards’ book” Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue”. That book is Eugene Richards’ in-depth look at three trouble communities: East New York; North Philadelphia; and the Red Hook Projects of Brooklyn New York. This photo seeps of emptiness, and craving. The photo presents the suffering required in the search for escape.

EugeneRichardsCTCB2This is another 12×9 photo from the book Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue. The paranoia, insanity and fear that bleeds from this photo. A man jacked up on coke pointing a gun in his girlfriends face while her child sits watching the whole exchange. The expression of rageful distrust, the woman’s wincing is repulsive, and yet awe inspiring as well. I’m embarrassed to say that this image felt to me like I was watching a car accident. It’s terrible and shocking yet I can’t look away. Haunting. That is one of the best words I can use to describe the image.

EugeneRichardsCTCB3 This is a 12×9 is from Eugene Richards’ book “Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue. This photo presents images of endless sadness and despair. The man inject drugs into his wrist in a shabby room, a shoe lace being used to tie off, and the photo of a baby girl blurred but almost front and center is not only heart breaking, but also an expression of compassion. That photo means something, it carries a story with it. One that cuts deeply to the bone.
